Last week on February 20, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico hosted a groundbreaking event for a Blue Door Neighborhood Center, located at Coors and Rio Bravo.
The BDNC will partner with community organizations and health care providers to offer resources, programming and services on a wide range of health topics like maternal health, diabetes, mental health and heart disease at no cost. The BDNC will also provide wellness classes, referrals to social services and more and is open to everyone in the community.
“We believe that health care is local,” said Janice Torrez, president of BCBSNM, in a press release. “By collaborating with organizations and residents in the South Valley, we can positively impact the overall health of our community members. The BDNC will offer education and wellness courses, access to support services and help our members make the best use of their benefits.”
Construction on the BDNC was scheduled to start this month and will open this summer. Hiring will focus on the multilingual needs of our members and the community, especially our Spanish-speaking population.
The Chamber attended the groundbreaking event to celebrate this exciting new project in our community. This BDNC is the first in New Mexico – but we hope it isn’t the last. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico is doing good work where it’s urgently needed, and we’re proud they’re members of our chamber.
