ONE FISH, TWO FISH … Albuquerque Reads celebrates impact of Dr. Seuss by giving away a trio of books to 200 students

Sally Giannini leads a class at Bel-Air Elementary School during an ABQ Reads session.

It’s nearly springtime, and ABQ Reads will continue to provide at least two books a month to kindergarten and first-grade students in its program classrooms through April.

On March 4, ABQ Reads tutors were able to share the world of Dr. Seuss with its three elementary schools — Atrisco, Bel-Air and Whittier — during the annual celebration of Dr. Seuss.

The Chamber was able to provide three Dr. Seuss books — “The Tooth Book,” “The Eye Book” and “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket” — to 200 students.

eld on March 2, Dr. Seuss Day is a holiday that celebrates the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, otherwise known by the pen name by which he authored children’s books: Dr. Seuss. During the 1990s, the National Education Association advocated for a day to celebrate reading all over the United States. In 1998, it started Read Across America and decided to hold it on the same day as Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

ABQ Reads celebrates all month as the program’s goal is to boost kindergarten and first-grade literacy skills.

The program is always looking for tutors as we begin to plan for the new school year in the fall. More information can be found at abqreads.com.
