MAKING CHANGES: Automatic Voter Registration in effect for Bernalillo County residents

County Clerk Michelle S. Kavanaugh informs Bernalillo County residents that Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) is now in effect across New Mexico.

As of July 1, if you’re a U.S. citizen, New Mexico resident, and 18 years of age, you will automatically be registered to vote when you apply or renew a driver’s license or state ID at the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) — unless you choose to opt out.

“This empowers more people to participate in our elections—and that’s something to celebrate,” says Kavanaugh.

After your MVD visit, you’ll receive a notice in the mail from the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office confirming your registration.

The notice will also include information on how to:

  • Request a mail-in ballot
    Update your political party
Opt out of voter registration if you choose not to be registered

If you do not return the notice, your voter registration will remain active. You can also make updates anytime at NMVote.org.
