LET’S TALK LITERACY: ABQ Reads chair Michelle Donaldson in the news to talk about Chamber/APS program

Albuquerque Reads, a program of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools, relies on its many volunteer tutors to help some of our youngest students gain the life-changing skills of reading and writing.

Michelle Donaldson, ABQ Reads chairwoman, GACC Board member and KOB-TV general manager, appeared on KKOB News Radio with Bob Clark last week to talk about ABQ Reads. She explained Albuquerque Reads is a game changer for learning, especially for kids who struggle with reading and fall behind.

Stream and listen to the interview at this link. Donaldson was also quoted in an Albuquerque Journal story about the ABQ Reads program last week. Read the story here.

“The power of one-on-one tutoring is what makes Albuquerque Reads so effective. By moving kids up in reading level, a wider world of learning is opened to them,” Donaldson said. “Albuquerque Reads is a chance for volunteers to make an immediate impact on Day One. Giving a child the confidence and joy of reading is a life-long gift. It changes the educational opportunities and outcomes in a substantial way.”

She also spoke about how ABQ Reads is always looking for new volunteers to join the ranks of this dedicated group. (Some volunteers have been with the program the full 20-plus years!) Tutor training is done year-round and continues from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at APS’ Berna Facio training center, Room 113. Check out ABQReads.com for more information on the program and becoming a tutor.

Tutors volunteer in any of three of Albuquerque Public Schools’ Title I schools: Atrisco, Bel Air and Whittier elementaries. They donate 90 minutes a week, and those who prefer to join a team can volunteer just one week a month.

Thank you, Michelle, for getting the great work about ABQ Reads out to the community!
