BREAKING NEWS: Action Needed — Paid Family and Medical Leave Bill Up Tomorrow in Senate Finance

Minutes ago, Senate Finance Committee chair Sen. George Muñoz (D-Cibola, McKinley & San Juan) announced that the paid family and medical leave act, House Bill 11, will be heard in his committee at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Please CONTACT members of the committee using this link to register your opposition to the bill.

As you will recall, the bill provides for six weeks of paid medical leave financed by new payroll taxes on employees and employers, totaling over $200 million per year – and that’s likely to escalate significantly in the future to maintain fund solvency. The fund has a high probability of being under water from the outset. In addition, 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave is granted along with a $193 million per year payment of “refunds” to parents. There is no specified funding, so this money is likely a significant hit to the general fund.

This bill is bad for New Mexico small businesses especially and makes New Mexico less competitive.
