The first completed section of the Albuquerque Rail Trail — The Aura of Sawmill — is now open for residents and visitors to explore the heart of the city on foot or by bike.
Stretching from Sawmill Market to Tiguex Park, the Sawmill segment sets the tone for what’s to come. The area features sculptural archways inspired by the area’s industrial past, LED surface and overhead lighting, benches, bike racks and emergency call boxes — creating a safe, well-lit corridor that connects people, neighborhoods, and stories.
According to the city, at Mountain Road and 19th Street, a new roundabout improves traffic flow and pedestrian safety, enhancing the connection between the Sawmill District, Old Town, and the trailhead.
Terri Cole, president and CEO of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce (GACC), highlighted that the Rail Trail aligns with their mission to foster a thriving business environment. She noted that for years, the Chamber has supported this urban trail project, which will enable residents and visitors to traverse from historic Rail Yards through various city landmarks.
