PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: Chamber joins College Board in promoting business principles finance course for students

Amanda Dawson, senior director state and district partnerships at The College Board, on video screen, and Peter Lorenz, GACC chairman of the board and Unirac Inc. CEO, talk about The College Board new business principles finance course for students.

On July 24, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors were given a presentation by Amanda Dawson, senior director state and district partnerships at The College Board, who joined the meeting virtually.

The College Board plays a major role in U.S. higher education and administers the SAT and AP programs nationwide.

The Chamber has joined with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in a partnership to promote a new AP Business Principles Finance Course for students.

“Our Chamber has successfully worked hard both at a state level and an APS level to advocate for financial literacy courses. So, this partnership is exciting,” said Peter Lorenz, GACC chairman of the board and Unirac Inc. CEO.

Dawson said The College Board reaches 7 million students annually, which is the impetus behind the organization’s Career Kickstart.

The new program provides a pathway for career-aware students. There are currently three programs in development:

  • AP Cybersecurity
    AP Networking
    AP Business with Personal Finance

Dawson said the Career Kickstart program will have:

Applied learning

  • Focused on problem-solving
  • Technical and professional skills

Career Connections

  • Relevant to workforce needs
  • Aligned to industry-recognized credentials and college credit
  • Embedded work-based learning

Inclusivity of all students, teachers and schools

  • Eliminates barriers to student success
  • Support for learners, teachers and schools everywhere
