Today, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors approved the Chamber’s legislative agenda (click here to download) for the 2025 session of the Legislature. The Chamber’s theme is “New Mexico Competes.” This theme drives a set of goals that, when realized, will better position New Mexico to compete for new businesses, workers, residents and visitors. Despite the many attractive attributes of our state, we are lagging behind surrounding states and other regions of the country in competing in today’s global marketplace, and consequently, our children are leaving for better-paying jobs elsewhere, and our paychecks aren’t as big as they should be.
For New Mexico to compete, we must achieve four important goals:
- We must make New Mexico safer – our reputation as a crime-ridden haven of repeat offenders must end to make our communities safer and more attractive as a place to do business.
- We must reduce the tax burden on families and businesses. Our gross receipts tax system is a real roadblock to business location and expansion.
- We must have high-performing schools. Our children deserve no less – being the worst in the nation is intolerable.
- We must make major reforms to medical malpractice insurance and take other bold steps to attract and retain medical professionals. Health care really isn’t health care if you can’t get an appointment with a doctor or access to a specialist.
