EXPANDING ITS REACH: Nusenda Credit Union opens new Journal Center branch

Nusenda Credit Union officials celebrate the opening of its Journal Center branch on Jan. 11.

On Jan. 11, Nusenda Credit Union opened its new Journal Center branch at 7644 Jefferson St. NE.

Nusenda has more than 20 branches throughout New Mexico and four in El Paso.

Nusenda Credit Union was founded in 1936, when eight local educators, led by Maurine Grammer, applied for a charter to form Albuquerque Public Schools Federal Credit Union.

In 1982, to reflect its growth among education-related employees and family members, the credit union’s name was changed to New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union.

By 2014, it had grown to 16 offices in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, Santa Fe, Taos and Socorro.

In 2015, it changed its name to Nusenda Credit Union to reflect the company’s expanding capabilities.

According to officials, throughout the years, Nusenda has grown from providing financial resources to educators and members of their families to serving hundreds of thousands of members in more than 500 businesses, nonprofits and educational institutions across the Land of Enchantment.

Nusenda is the largest credit union in New Mexico, both in membership and assets.

It is also a member of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.
