CHAMBER PROGRAM: Leadership Albuquerque Drills Down on the Meaning of Leadership at Annual Retreat

Last week on March 12, the Leadership Albuquerque Class of 2024 gathered at BlueHalo for a day-long leadership retreat.

The class heard from Tom Antram, Leadership Albuquerque Chair and President & CEO of French Funerals and Cremations, about the leadership lessons he’s learned, like continuing to learn, being authentic, becoming a servant leader and not striving to please everyone. Former Mayor and State Rep. Richard Berry then spoke to the class to share some lessons from his lifetime of leadership in the public and private sectors.

Participants also took part in an interactive presentation from Jeffrey Vargas, President & CEO of Generationology. Vargas led the class in outlining the major generational groups and their defining characteristics to help them better understand and lead coworkers who may see the world very differently because of when they come from. After a lunch break where participants broke into their service project groups to make more progress on their project, Vargas returned with another interactive presentation, this time about how to envision and cultivate the habits and behaviors of a leader.

At the end of the day, Leadership Albuquerque program advisor Scott Darnell taught the class all about negotiation – what it is and why it’s a critical leadership skill – and guided participants through exercises to sharpen their negotiating skills.

Big thanks to BlueHalo for hosting this leadership development program day, and of course, thanks to our program day’s speakers for sharing their deep knowledge with the class.

Leadership Albuquerque’s next program day will focus on K-12 education in April – stay tuned!
