Albuquerque Reads Wins Grant: United Way of Central New Mexico Awards More than $15K to Chamber Literacy Partnership With APS

Last week, the Chamber received notification that United Way of Central New Mexico made an award of more than $15,000 to support Albuquerque Reads, the Chamber’s 16-year partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools to support literacy education for kindergarten students in three high-needs elementary schools.

Albuquerque Reads recruits, trains, and guides tutors who — in coordination with the students’ classroom teachers and curriculums — provide three sessions of one-on-one literacy tutoring for hundreds of students. This grant will go to support the program’s expansion in the upcoming program year to serve first graders at Whittier Elementary, a state-designated turnaround school with reading proficiency rates of 23%. Support will also go to building critical program-wide database infrastructure supporting the work of hundreds of tutors annually.

The Chamber is excited to build on its long-term commitment to improving education in Albuquerque schools, and is grateful to United Way of Central new Mexico for its eagerness to partner with the Chamber and Albuquerque Public Schools in that mission.
