BUILDING A FOUNDATION: Chamber’s Albuquerque Reads seeks volunteer tutors, sets training for upcoming school year

Albuquerque Reads tutors deliver 90 minutes each week of personalized literacy tutoring for each kindergarten-first-grade Title I student in the program and supplies every student it serves with up to 20 books for their at-home library.

Albuquerque Reads is a classroom-based tutoring program that helps struggling kindergarten and first-grade readers boost their literacy achievement to enable lifelong learning.

Did you know that from kindergarten to grade two, children Learn to Read? From grade three on, children Read to Learn.

Join Albuquerque Public Schools, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and volunteers like you to make a lasting difference in a child’s life.

The Chamber is seeking volunteers for the school year. Tutoring begins in mid-September and requires just 90 minutes a week of your time – or join a team with friends or colleagues and tutor once a month!

Fast Facts on Albuquerque Reads:

  • A one-on-one literacy tutoring program at three elementary schools: Whittier, Atrisco and Bel-Air.
  • Delivers 90 minutes each week of personalized literacy tutoring for each kindergarten-first-grade Title I student in the program (Sept – May) and supplies every student it serves with up to 20 books for their at-home library.
  • Includes access to online reading resources for at-home reading.

There are several tutor training opportunities scheduled; tutors should sign up for a three-hour training block at the school they will tutor at:

  • Sep. 2 – 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Sep. 3 – 12 p.m. -.3 p.m.
  • Sep. 4 – 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Sept. 9 – 9 a.m. -12 p.m.
  • Sept. 10 – 12 p.m. -3 p.m.
  • Sept. 11 – 9 a.m. -12 p.m.
