ELECTION 2020: Constitutional Amendment 1 Is Good for New Mexico

Much-needed Public Regulation Commission reform is on the ballot this election in the form of Constitutional Amendment 1, which would reduce the number of commissioners from five to three and require each to be a well-qualified expert appointed by the Governor – as opposed to being individually elected.

Two years ago, the Chamber successfully advocated for the passage of this measure in the Legislature, which was supported by Republicans and Democrats alike who have been frustrated by the long-time inconsistency and ineffectiveness of the PRC’s regulatory oversight. It’s now the voters’ turn to weigh in on this important proposal. The Chamber believes an appointed commission of experts would provide more predictability, fairness, and consistency in New Mexico’s regulatory environment, which is necessary for long-term economic growth.

The Chamber urges your support of this constitutional amendment this November. Find your sample ballot and other important information like where to vote at NMVote.org.
